Reduced Deadtime and Higher Rate Photon-Counting Detection using a Multiplexed Detector Array

چکیده
Abstract We present a scheme for a photon-counting detection system that can be operated at incident photon rates higher than otherwise possible by suppressing the effects of detector deadtime. The method uses an array of N detectors and a 1-by-N optical switch with a control circuit to direct input light to live detectors. Our calculations and models highlight the advantages of the technique. In particular, using this scheme, a group of N detectors provides an improvement in operation rate that can exceed the improvement that would be obtained by a single detector with deadtime reduced by 1/N, even if it were feasible to produce a single detector with such a large improvement in deadtime. We model the system for CW and pulsed light sources, both of which are important for quantum metrology and quantum key distribution applications.

Improved photon-counting detector performance by intelligent management of detector deadtime
We discuss the difficulties of photon-counting at extremely high rates and introduce a scheme for a photon-counting detection system that addresses these difficulties. The method uses an array of N detectors and a 1-by-N optical switch with a control circuit to direct input light to live detectors. We compare performance of our system to other, passive detection systems and show that our detect...
متن کاملScalable multiplexed detector system for high-rate telecom-band single-photon detection.
We present an actively multiplexed photon-counting detection system at telecom wavelengths that overcomes the difficulties of photon-counting at high rates. We find that for gated detectors, the heretofore unconsidered deadtime associated with the detector gate is a critical parameter, that limits the overall scalability of the scheme to just a few detectors. We propose and implement a new sche...
متن کاملHigh Accuracy Calibration of Photon-Counting Detectors
We discuss a practical implementation of a photon-counting detector calibration using correlated photon pairs produced by parametric down-conversion. In this calibration scheme, the detection of a first photon triggers the measurement sequence aimed at detection of a second photon by a detector under test (DUT). We also describe measurements of radiant power with a photon-counting detector, whi...
متن کاملMonolithic Active-Quenching and Active-Reset Circuit for Single-Photon Avalanche Detectors
A monolithic circuit has been designed for active-quenching and active-reset of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), which operate above the breakdown voltage BD for detecting single photons. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully integrated circuit of this kind ever reported. It can operate with any available SPAD device, since it generates pulses high enough to quench detect...
متن کاملThe dual-color photon counting histogram with non-ideal photodetectors.
Dual-color photon counting histogram (PCH) analysis utilizes the photon counts in two detection channels to distinguish species by differences in brightness and color. Here we modify the existing dual-color PCH theory, which assumes ideal detectors, to include the non-ideal nature of the detector. Specifically, we address the effects of deadtime and afterpulsing. Both effects modify the shape o...
